Internet | a gigantic computer network that connects computers across the world. It has changed the way people communicate, work, and have fun. |
World Wide Web | (the web) is only one part of the Internet. It is a way of accessing the huge collection of information, services and Web sites available through the Internet |
Web site | a specific location on the Web that contains a collection of related files and resources by a person, group, or orginazation. |
uniform resource locator (URL) | the address of a website. |
Internet service provider | a company that sells you access to the internet, usually for a monthy fee. |
Web browser | a software program that lets you surf the Web and interact with Web sites. |
Electronic Mail (e-mail) | another way that you can share information using the Internet. |
Netiquette | refers to the good manners one uses in electronic communications. |
Spam | like junk mail. |
firewall | a hardware or software that protects a computer or network from intruders. |
home page | the first Web page you see when your browser opens. |
drill down | to find more specific information. |
site map | an index of all the main pages in the site that you might use to junp straight to a page without drilling down. |
bookmark | a shortcut stored in your browser that takes you directly to a Web page. |
Favorites | what bookmarks are called. |
History | the record of your Web sites visits. |
Print Preview | what allows you to view a page so you can see how it will look when it is all printed. |
Search engine | a special kind of Web site that lets you search for other Web pages using keywords. |
Boolean search | a search that uses keywords plus special symbols to find the exact information you want by eliminating search results that are to general or too broad. |
