| Term | Definition |

| Angle | A writer's specific perspective on a broader topic. |
| Attribution | To identify the person who said the words being quoted. To credit a quotation to its source. |
| Caption | A few sentences that identify the who, what, where, when, why and how of a picture. This might also tell the reader what happened before or after the picture was taken. |
| Copy | The main story on a yearbook spread. |
| Editorializing | When a reporter provides his or her opinion to the reader, it is considered doing this. The reporter should remain objective and allow readers to establish their own opinions based on the information presented. |
| Headline | A line of large type used to tell the reader what is to follow. It introduces the topic and serves as a main point of interest on the spread. |
| Interview | A conversation between a reporter and a source. The purpose of this is to obtain information and quotations a reporter can use in a piece of copy. |
| Lead | An attention-grabbing introduction that sets the tone of the story. |
| Quotation | A direct statement a reporter obtains through an interview. These are included word-for-word in copy, are set off with quotation marks and include attribution. |
| Source | The person a reporter interviews. |
| Style Sheet | A list of guidelines a writer uses to maintain consistent punctuation and capitalization. |
| Subhead | A secondary headline. |
| Transition | A factual sentence a writer uses to link one quotation to another in a piece of copy. |
