DTP 1.01 Typography

TermDefinition
Desktop Publishing Using a desktop computer and publishing software to create documents for publication
Target audience Intended audience
Typography The design of the characters and the way they are presented on the page
Typeface The basic design of a character
Serif Has attributes or strokes at the tips of the letters
Sans serif No (sans = without) serifs at the tips of the letters
Ornamental or Decorative typefaces Designed to catch the eye...can be hard to read
Script Appear to have been written by hand
Font The specific size, weight and style applied to a typeface
Font style The slant, weight and special effects applied to text
Font families The different sizes, weights and variations of a typeface
Monospaced Each letter takes up the same amount of space regardless of the letter size
Proportional The amount of space for each character is adjusted to the width of that character
Leading The vertical spacing between lines of text (similar to line spacing)
Kerning Horizontal spacing between pairs of letters
Tracking Horizontal spacing between all characters in a large block of text
