| Desktop Publishing | Using a desktop computer and publishing software to create documents for publication |
| Target audience | Intended audience |
| Typography | The design of the characters and the way they are presented on the page |
| Typeface | The basic design of a character |
| Serif | Has attributes or strokes at the tips of the letters |
| Sans serif | No (sans = without) serifs at the tips of the letters |
| Ornamental or Decorative typefaces | Designed to catch the eye...can be hard to read |
| Script | Appear to have been written by hand |
| Font | The specific size, weight and style applied to a typeface |
| Font style | The slant, weight and special effects applied to text |
| Font families | The different sizes, weights and variations of a typeface |
| Monospaced | Each letter takes up the same amount of space regardless of the letter size |
| Proportional | The amount of space for each character is adjusted to the width of that character |
| Leading | The vertical spacing between lines of text (similar to line spacing) |
| Kerning | Horizontal spacing between pairs of letters |
| Tracking | Horizontal spacing between all characters in a large block of text |
