QuestionAnswer
What are the basic components of a computer? The basic components of a computer are hardware and software.
What is hardware and what are the five categories of hardware? The physical components of the computer are hardware and they are the central processing unit (CPU), input devices, output devices, memory and storage devices
Define the central processing unit and name its components. The CPU is the brains of the computer and controls the rest of the computer. It contains the arithmetic logic unit and control unit.
What are some functions of the CPU's components? The ALU performs the calculations and logic operations while the control unit carries out instructions in the software and directs the flow of data through the computer.
Give 3 examples of input and output devices. Three input devices are a mouse, a keyboard and a joystick while three output devices are speakers, printers and scanners.
Define memory and name the types of memory. Memory enables a computer to store data temporarily. Read only memory (ROM) and random access memory. (RAM)
What is a peripheral device? A peripheral device is located outside the CPU but is still controlled by it, like input and output devices.
Define software. Software is the name given to computer programs which instruct the hardware.
Define system software and utility software System software controls the hardware and how all other software works, utility software aims to protect and maintain the system software like protecting computers from damage of viruses.
What is application software? Application software instructs the hardware to carry out a specific task like word processors, spreadsheets and databases.
What is the difference between an input and output device? An input device gets data from the outside world into the computer while an output device receives data from the computer and transfers it to the outside world.
Give another name for system software and an example. System software is also known as operating system like Windows.
Define information technology and communication technology. IT refers to the use of hardware and software that allows us to access, retrieve, convert, store, organise, manipulate and present data and information, while CT describes telecommunications equipment that allows data and information to be accessed.
