alliteration the repetition of initial consonant sound in a group of words
hyperbole a figure of speech which is an exaggeration
personification the assigning of human characteristics to animals, objects, or ideas
onomatopoeia the use of words that suggest sound associated with an action
simile a comparison using LIKE or AS
metaphor a comparison between two different objects
exposition the introduction (usually) of a story that gives background information necessary for the reader to understand the rest of the story
rising action the complications that increase the intensity of the conflict prior to the climax
climax the point of most intense conflict, the crisis or turning point of the story
resolution the events that follow the climax
