autonomic nervous system innervates organs and tissues not usually controlled voluntarily, ie cardiac mm, smooth mm, and glands. has two branches
sympathetic branch "fight or flight" branch of the ANS; generally activated in emergency or stressful situations
parasympathetic branch "rest and digest" branch of the ANS; activated in times of inactivity and responsible for promoting nutrient digestion
somatic nervous system innervates tissues controlled voluntarily, ie skeletal muscle
