QuestionAnswer
The Alphabetic Principle The idea that each sound or phoneme in spoken language is represented by a letter.
Phonics Links the individual sounds to the individual letters. Making associations between the letters and the sounds they stand for.
Phonemic Awareness The ability to recognize the smallest units of sounds (phonemes)in spoken language AND the ability to manipulate those sounds [segment, count, add, delete, and substitute].
Phonemes The smallest units of sounds in oral language.
Research indicates that phonemic awareness is a strong predictor of this in later grades. reading achievement
Letter recognition Refers to knowing letter names and letter shapes.
