Vocabulary for 2012-13

QuestionAnswer
.gif A type of file format that supports both transparency and animation.
.png A type of file format used for images and photographs that appear on web pages.
.jpg File format used for images placed on web pages that is capable of showing millions of colors but is small in file size.
_blank Opens the web page in a new browser window.
Asymmetrical balance A design principle in which page elements are placed unevenly on either side of an imaginary line in the center of the page.
Banner Image that generally appears across the top of down the side of a web page and can incorporate the company’s logo and contact information.
Breadcrumb trail A list of links that provides a path from the initial page opened in a website to the page being currently viewed.
Cascading style sheets Sets of formatting attributes used to format web pages to provide a consistent presentation for content across the site.
Child page A page at a lower level in a web hierarchy that links to page at a higher level.
Contiguous Items that are next to one another.
Compositing Combining images from more than one source.
Description A short synopsis that resides in the head section of a web page and explains the website content.
Dynamic Content Content that allows the user to interact with the page by clicking or typing, and then responds to this input in some way.
External Links Links that connect to web pages in other websites or to an email address.
Favicon A small icon that represents your site, similar to a logo that appears next to the title of a web page in a browser.
File extension A suffix (separated from the base filename by a dot) to the name of a computer file applied to indicate the file format of its contents or usage.
ftp The process of uploading and downloading files to and from a remote site.
Flattening Merges all visible layers into one layer deleting all other layers greatly reducing file size.
Font combination A set of three type choices that specify which fonts a browser should use to display test on a screen.
Head Content The part of web page that includes the page title that appears in the title bar of the browser and meta tags for keywords and description.
Hotspot A clickable area on an image that, when clicked, links to a different location on that page or to another web page.
http A language web developers use to create web pages.
Image map An image that has been divided up into sections, each of which serves as a link.
Intellectual property An image or idea that is owned and retained by legal control.
Keywords Relating to the content of a website and reside in the head section of a web page.
Mask A feature that lets you protect or modify a particular area.
Named anchor A specific location on a web page that is used to link to that portion of the web page.
Opacity Determines the percentage of transparency.
Optic center The point around which objects on the page are balanced; occurs approximately 3/8ths from the top of the page.
Vectoring The process of converting a type layer to an image layer.
Resolution To draw on a computer screen; ex.: fonts can be rendered differently
Rollover A special effect that changes the appearance of an object when the mouse moves over it.
Rule of Thirds A design principle that entails dividing a page into nine squares and then placing the page elements of most interest on the intersections of the grid lines.
Rules A combination of formatting attributes that can be applied to a block of text or other page elements; begins with a period.
Static web page Page content that does not charge or allow user interaction.
Vignette A feature in which the border of a picture or portrait fades into the surrounding color at its edges.
White space An area on a web page that is not filled with text or graphics; may or may not be white.
Internet service provider A service to which you subscribe to be able to connect to the Internet with your computer.
