What is computer hardware The physical equipment that runs the application software
What are the functions of computer hardware 1. Input 2. Output 3. Storage
What is input hardware External devices outside of the computer that provide information and instructions to the computer
What are examples of input hardware 1. Keyboard 2. Mouse 3. Modum
What is output hardware External devices that transfer information from the computer to the user
What are examples of output hardware 1. Video display 2. Screen 3. Printer 4. Speakers
Abort Abnormal termination of a program or process through user input or program failure
Application Software used to perform a specific task such as word processor, spreadsheets, database programs
Backup The action of copying important data to a second location to protect against data loss
Booting The act of starting up computer and loading system software into memory
Bus Electronic pathway
Cache A section of memory used to temporarily store data
CD-ROM A read only optical storage technology taht uses compact discs
CPU (Central Processing Unit) The brain of the computer where most all information processing is carried out
Client A computer thats able to access the resources of other computers on the network
Crash A sudden, unexpected system failure
Data Any information stored in an electronic fashion
DOS Disk Operating System
Driver A piece of software that tells the computer how to operate an external or added device such as a printer of hard disc
Ethernet A common method of networking computers in a LAN
Executable file A file that is a program
File Server A computer that controls which other computers are allowed access to its storage media
Firewall A combination of hardware and software that acts as a gatekeeper to restrict other computers from gaining access to data
Gigabyte 1024 megabites or 1073741824 bites (over 1 billion)
Hard Drive Main storage device in a computer
Hardware Any physical device connected to a computer
HIS Hospital Information System
Lan (local area network) A computer network limited to the immediate area; usually the same building or floor of a building
Motherboard The main circuit board of a computer. Its the part of the computer where all other components are attached
Network A group of computers set up to communicate with one another
Operating System The software of the computer that allows all the other software to run. It also tells the computer how to run and execute the commands
Print Queue A list of print jobs waiting to be sent to a printer
RAM (random access memory) The physical memory installed in a computer
Upload To send a file to another computer
WAN (Wide are network) Any internet or network that covers an area larger than a single building or campus
