| Geometric shapes | precise shapes that can be defined using mathematical formulas. |
| Free-form shapes | irregular or uneven shapes. |
| Forms | Objects having three dimensions(Height, width and depth) |
| Space | The element of art that refers to the emptiness or area between, around, above, below or within objects. |
| Positive space | The shapes or forms are called the space or the figure. |
| Negative | The empty spaces between the shapes or forms are the negative space or the ground. |
| Freestanding | Sculpture that is surrounded by negative space. The viewer must move through this negative space to view the piece from all sides. |
| Relief | Sculpture that projects out from a flat surface into negative space. It can be bas relief (low) or high relief (high) depending on how far the objects stick out into the negative space. |
| Holograms | Images created in 3 dimensions using laser beams |
| Natural shapes and forms | Made from the forces of nature |
| Manufactured shapes and forms | Made by the forces of humans |
| Chiaroscuro | Italian word for the “arrangement of light and dark”. The Italians used dramatic lighting during the Renaissance and later during the Baroque period. Today's word for Chiaroscuro- Shading, modeling, value. |
