CD Compact disk, a type of storage device for electronic data that can be read by a computer
computer virus A destructive program loaded onto a computer and run without the user’s knowledge
controller An employee who oversees company finances
data mining A process in which a software program searches for significant patterns in data
demographic data Statistics that describe a population such as age or race
DVD Digital video disk, a type of storage device for electronic data that can be read by a computer or a player connected to a TV or stereo
e-mail The electronic transfer of messages using computers and software
electronic imaging Converting paper documents to pictures stored and displayed via computer
extranet An information network like an intranet, but partially available to select outside users
file transfer protocol A tool that allows files to be uploaded to or downloaded from a remote computer
firewall Software and hardware designed to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to a computer or network
hardware The physical parts of a computer or related equipment
hypertext Highlighted, underlined, or contrast-colored words or images that, when clicked, take the user to another location
incompatible Unable to work together
information processing Putting facts or numbers into a meaningful and useful form
interactive voice response A recorded message accessed and directed by the user to provide or record information
Internet service provider A company that sells access to the Internet
mailing list A directory of Internet user addresses
microwave transmission Radio waves that carry data
modem A device that allows computer data to be transmitted via the telephone system
newsgroup A publication of online articles and messages related to a certain topic
overhead Business costs not directly related to a product or service sold
proprietary information Privately owned information, such as a design or formula, also called intellectual property
relational database A software program that allows the user to link data from a number of database tables to find information or generate reports
sales channel A method of marketing products such as through retail stores or catalogs
software Programs containing instructions for a computer
transaction A business deal or agreement, exchange of data, or sale
USB flash drive A magnetic storage device for electronic data that can be read by a computer
