Principles of Design

What are the elements of design? space, line, texture, color, shape from
What are the principles of design? balance, rhythm, emphasis, harmony, proportion
What is the principle repetition? a design that is copied or repeated.
How does texture affect color? it can make it seem lighter or darker
What do curved lines suggest? adds a soft touch to the design
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? horizontal draws your eyes accross, vertical draws your eyes up and down, and radial draws your eyes out becasue of how the lines are positioned.
What do diagonal lines suggest? movement and excitement
What is space? any area provided for a specific purpose
What are the four types of rhythm? gradation, repetition, continuous line, radiation
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? when things are not identical but are equal in visual weight. ex: a table with two lights on both sides but on one side, there is a picture and on the other a flower of the same size.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? horizonal go side to side and vertical go up and down
What is the golden mean? 3:5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? shape isflat and form is three dimensioned.
What are the five types of balance? symmetrical, assymetrical, horizontal, vertical, and radial.
What does unity or harmony mean? that all elements and principles of design work together
What are the two things texture involves? how it feels and looks
What are the four types of line? horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved
What is proportion? hwo the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? diagonal lines
What is symmetrical balance? Example? that everything is even and would be the same if you cut it down the middle. ex: a table has the same lamp and picture on both sides.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? it's on item or object that stands out. also called focal point
What happens when you use a continuous line? it creates a continuous line for your eye to follow
What is another name for symmetrical balance? formal balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? gradation is when the design increases ini size or color as it goes along and radiation is when lines move out from a center point
