Elements of Design

What are the elements of design? space, line, texture, color, & form
What are the principles of design? balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repitition, proportion, rhythm, variety, & unity
What is the principle repetition? a design is copied or repeated
How does texture affect color? smooth surface reflect more light than rough surfaces; rough surfaces absorb more light
What do curved lines suggest? adds a soft, graceful effect to designs
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? horizontal: left & right parts are equal; vertical: top & bottom parts are equal; radial: elements radiate out from design
What do diagonal lines suggest? suggest action, movement, & excitement
What is space? the area provided for a particular purpose
What are the four types of rhythm? gradiation, radiation, repitition, & continuous line
What is asymmetrical balance? Example?
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? horizontal: leads the eye left to right; vertical: leads the eye up
What is the golden mean? 3:5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? shape: 2-dimensional form: 3-dimensional
What are the five types of balance? asymmetrical, symmetrical, vertical, horizontal, & radical
What does unity or harmony mean? all elements & principles of design work together
What are the two things texture involves? how it feels to the touch & how it appears to feel
What are the four types of line? horizontal, vertical, diagonal, & curved
What is proportion? how the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest?
What is symmetrical balance? Example?
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? one object or item stands out; focal point
What happens when you use a continuous line? design creates a continuous line for the eye to follow
What is another name for symmetrical balance? formal balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? informal balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation?
