| bicameral | having, consisting of, or based on two legislative chambers. |
| republic | a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch, and who is usually a president. |
| ordinance | a law set forth by a governmental authority. |
| depreciate | to lower in value |
| depression | a period of low economic activity marked by rising levels of unemployment. |
| manumission | formal emancipation from slavery |
| proportional | corresponding in size, degree or intensity |
| compromise | a settlement of differences reached by mutual consessions |
| federalism | the distribution of power in a government between a central authority and the constituent |
| legislative branch | the branch in charge of making laws, consisting of the congress as well as several government agencies |
| executive branch | the branch that carries out and inforces laws, consisting of the president, vice president, the cabinet, executive departments as well as other boards, commisions and committees. |
| judicial branch | the branch in charge of deciding the meaning of laws, consisting of the supreme court |
| checks and balances | a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power |
| amendment | the process of altering or amending a law or document (such as a constitution) by parliamentary or constitutional procedure |
| federalist | an advocate of federalism |
| anti-federalist | a person apposed to the US Constitution |
