Civil War Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Sectionalism | Being loyal to only part of a nation, not the whole nation. For example at the time of the civil war, Americans saw themselves as either Northerners or Southerners. |
Fugitive | A person fleeing from custody. For example it can be a person escaping jail, or slavery. |
Secede | To withdraw or to separate, for example the South threatened to secede from the Union many times, and finally did causing the civil war. |
Abstain | Restrain from doing something. |
Popular Sovereignty | Where the people decide on things by voting. |
Border ruffians | People who supported slavery who, in 1854 to 1860, crossed the border into Kansas to force them to accept slavery. |
Arsenal | weapons and military equipment stored by a country, or group, or person. |
Secession | The Southern state's withdrawal from the Union. |
States rights | Right of states to not enforce certain Federal laws. |
Border state | Slave states that stayed in the Union. |
Blockade | Preventing goods or people from entering or leaving, using force. |
Offensive | Something that upsets someone. |
Rebel | Someone who is against something. |
Yankee | What the Union soldiers were called. |
Blockade runner | A ship that somehow enters or leaves a blockaded port. |
Ironclad | A warship protected by iron or steal armor plates. |
Casualty | A death. |
Emancipate | Set free. |
Ratify | To formally approve something. |
Habeas corpus | a writ that requires a person under arrest to be taken to a judge or into court. |
Draft | Making it a requirement for men to join the military. |
Bounty | Reward.(MONEY!!!) |
Greenback | MONEY!!!!!! (what Jeff desires) |
Inflation | Increase in prices and decrease in money value. |
Entrenched | A habit that is firmly established. |
Total war | A war that is unrestricted. |
