| Railroad Strike of 1877 | A worker strike sparked by the B&O railroad company cutting wages for workers for the third time in the year. |
| Haymarket Riot, 1886 | A labor protest rally that turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at the police. |
| Homestead Strike, 1892 | A strike against the Carnegie Steel Company by the strongest trade union, the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers, that won in favor of the workers. |
| Pullman Strike, 1894 | A railroad strike that gave a huge step for laborers and created the national holiday, Labor Day. |
| Gilded Age | The era after the Civil War that lasted from 1870 to about 1900. The same time as the industrial revolution. |
| Boxer Rebellion | An anti-imperialist, anti-colonist, anti-Christian rebellion take took place in China |
| Spanish American War | An armed conflict between the United States and Spain. |
| Prohibition | The law the United States put into action that prohibited alcohol in the United States. |
| Great Depression | The worst economic downturn in the world from 1929 to 1939 after the stock market crash of October 1929. |
| World War I | A global war between the Allies (the US, Britain, France, Soviet Union) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary) that lasted from 1914 to 1918. |
| World War II | A global war between the Allies (the US, Britain, France, Soviet Union) and the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) that lasted from 1939 to 1945. |
| Battle of Argonne Forest | A big part of the final Allied offensive in World War I along the Western Front in Europe. |
| The First Red Scare (1920s) | The first widespread fear of communists, mainly due to the Bolshevik Revolution and anarchists. |
| Battle of Midway | One of the most decisive naval battles of World War I where the US defeated Japan. |
| Bataan Death March | The forced transfer of thousands of American and Filipino prisoners of war that was approximately 65 miles. |
| Invasion of Normandy | Also known as D-Day, the invasion of Normandy was a battle during World War I where thousands of United States and British forces invaded Normandy, conquered Western Europe from Germany’s control and was a turning point for the war. |
| Harlem Renaissance | A cultural explosion of art, music and literature in Harlem, New York during the early 20th century. |
| Sinking of the Lusitania | The sinking of British ocean liner Lusitania by a German U-boat during WWI that caused tensions between the US and Germany. |
| Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor | A surprise attack on the US naval base, Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii. |
| Dust Bowl | An area that included Oklahoma, Northern Texas and Kansas where soil erosion ruined the land in the 1930s and caused people to move. |
| Klondike Gold Rush | The migration of thousands to the Klondike region in north-western Canada that lead to the US obtaining Alaska. |
| Berlin Airlift | An airlift of food to the citizens of West Berlin to help sustain them in the blockaded city. |
| Korean War | A war between communist North Korea and South Korea supported by the US and the Soviet Union due to the Cold War. |
| Vietnam War | A war between communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam intensified by the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union. |
| Gulf of Tonkin Incident | A confrontation between the US and North Vietnam in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. |
| Montgomery Bus Boycott | A protest against the policy of racial segregation on the transit bus systems. |
| Freedom Rides | Civil rights activists rode buses down south where buses were segregated to enforce the Supreme Court ruling that segregated buses were unconstitutional. |
| Little Rock Nine | Nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School and were prevented from going in by citizens of Arkansas and the governor of Arkansas. |
| Chicano Mural Movement | A movement where artists used walls and buildings around Southwest America to depict Mexican-American culture. |
| OPEC Embargo | An oil embargo set by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries aimed at countries they thought supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War. |
| Iran-Contra Scandal | A secret arms deal by the U.S. (during Reagan’s presidency) of missiles and other weapons to terrorists in Lebanon to free Americans being held captive. |
| Iran Hostage Crisis | A standoff between the U.S. and Iran who were holding Americans captive. |
| Kent State Shooting | The shooting of unarmed college students protesting the bombing of Cambodia by members of the Ohio National Guard. |
| Watergate Scandal | A break-in to the Democratic National Committee during June 1972 by five men that were connected to President Nixon’s reelection campaign, revealing multiple abuses of power by Nixon. |
| Election of 2000 | The presidential election between Al Gore and George W. Bush where Bush barely won against Al Gore. |
| September 11, 2001 attacks | A series of four terrorist attacks by Islamic group, al-Qaeda, against the U.S. |
| Hurricane Katrina | A category 5 hurricane that made landfall in Florida and Louisiana and destroyed many cities, especially New Orleans. Levees (protective flooding walls) in New Orleans were destroyed by Katrina, causing major flooding in the city. |
| Election of 2008 | the presidential election after George W. Bush’s presidency that involved Barack Obama and John McCain. |
| Sputnik Launch | A satellite made by the Soviet Union that was launched into orbit around the Earth and surprised Americans who thought they would have done it first. |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | a confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union after learning about the Soviet Union moving ballistic missiles to Cuba. |
