Sectionalism Loyalty to one's own region of the country, rather than to the nation as a whole
compromise an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.
states' rights the rights and powers held by individual US states rather than by the federal government.
Nullification A state's refusal to recognize an act of Congress that it considers unconstitutional
Protective Tariff A tax on imported goods that raises the price of imports so people will buy domestic goods
region an area defined by one or more natural or cultural characteristics that set it apart from other areas
Federalism A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments
Secession Formal withdrawal of states or regions from a nation
Confederacy A loose union of independent states; name of government used by the southern states that seceded during the Civil War
