How did the North feel about slavery? They didn't think that it was right, but had child labor.
What types of farms did the South and North have? The South had plantations and fields with crops. The North had small family farms.
What was the difference in the soil in the North and South? The North was rocky and the Soth was soft and fertile.
What was the life of a Southern Planter, a Nothern Capitalists, and poor Southern Farmers? The South Planters had large farms with many servanst and slaves. The Norther Capitalists had children work for them and had a lived on a small family farm. The poor Southern Farmers had fields, but didn't have as many slaves and they also worked.
What did the Northerns have to give up to help urbanization? They would give up some of their farm land for other people to live.
Understand the differences between the economic systems of the North vs the South during the Industrial Revolution. The North’s economy was based off of their child labor. It was also based off of their successful manufacturing. The South’s economy was based off of their slaves, their natural resources, and their trade with the North and other countries.
Telegraph The telegraph was a different way of talking to others besides sending a letter. It worked by transmitting signals electronically, and was the first big step toward greater technology and ways of contact. It was a helpful invention.
Cotton Gin It was created to help the process of getting the cotton seeds from the cotton. It made it 50 times faster. It also increased slave labor.
Canals These are channels. They are dug across land and filled with water. This provides for transportation.
Railroads These are a system of railroad tracks. This requires trains, organization, and personnel for it to work. It really helped transportation.
The Factory System The factory system brought workers and machinery together in one place. It also started child labor. They needed more people to help with the work, and they weren’t using slaves anymore.
Steamboats The steam boat was a form of travel. This wasn’t the best way to travel though. When the rivers froze travel had to stop.
Improved Threshers It was a machine that threshes grain. It also removes the seeds from the stalks and husks. This was useful.
Howe’s Sewing Machine It was used for fixing clothes at a factory use, and on production lines. The sewing machine was created in September 10, 1846. The sewing machine was used for making blankets, and clothing. It made sewing much easier, and faster.
Be able to recall and understand all three of the legislative problems caused by the passage of the Missouri Compromise that we discussed in class (1 Sentence/issue) Missouri Comprimise let the South keep slaves and make laws about slavery and the North would be slave free, but was allowed to keep child labor.
Difference from African Americans in the South and North. Be able to list at least 3. South: They could buy their freedom, were treated a little bit better, and still weren't equal. North: Had very bad working conditions, had to work a lot and did get paid, and faced a veyr ahrd life in general.
Similarities and Differences between the South Plantations and the North Industries. Same: Treated the workers unfairly, had access to water, and they all suffered from their owners. Difference: South had small family farms, North had factories and building, North - child labor, and South-slaves.
