UNIT 6: 13 Colonies

Known as the "Bread Basket" colonies because so many colonists farmed wheat and other grains used for making bread; Many factories produced iron, paper, textiles, and cloth. Middle
Many plantations grew crops including sugar, rice, cotton, indigo, and tobacco. Crops were maintained by slave labor Southern
Economy was largely fishing and logging; Because this region did not have good farmland, these colonies had to import food and use their natural resources like cod, whales, and lumber to trade for supplies they needed. New England
Government leaders in these colonies were religious leaders and they outlawed religions different from their own. (They were not religiously tolerant.) New England
Many places here guaranteed religious tolerance and banned taxation without representation. Middle
The wealthy land owners of this region had most of the political power. (Only the very rich people held government positions.) Southern
This region was made up of many small towns and small farms. The Puritans that settled here were very religious and were not religiously tolerant of people who worshipped differently. New England
Colonists here came from many different European countries (not just England). Because of this, the culture here included a mix of many different traditions and religions Middle
Many wealthy land owners, slaves, and indentured servants lived here. The society was very economically diverse and unequal. Southern
