Battle of Antietam | single most bloodiest day in American history where 26, 000 Americans died in combat |
Emancipation Proclamation | decree issued by President Lincoln freeing enslaved people in those parts of the Confederacy still in rebellion on January 1, 1863 |
habeas corpus | a legal writ, or order, that guarantees a prisoner the right to be heard in court |
draft | a system of selecting people for required military service |
bounty | reward or payment |
greenback | paper money issued by the United States government |
substitute | an alternate or replacement |
entrench | to place within a trench, or ditch, for defense; a strong defensive position |
flank | the side or edge of a military formation |
Stonewall Jackson | famous Confederate General who was an excellent military strategist a gained his nickname at the Battle of Bull Run |
54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment | famous African American regiment that assaulted Fort Wagner in 1863 receiving heavy casualties |
reverse | to go in the opposite direction |
Battle of Gettysburg | the high water mark of the Confederacy where the Army of Northern Virginia was badly defeated in Pennsylvania |
General Robert Lee | famed Confederate General who lead the Army of Northern Virginia through many a campaign |
General Ulysses Grant | famed Union General who lead the Army of the Potomac to victory defeating the Confederates in Virginia |
Gettysburg Address | President Lincoln's speech dedicating a National Cemetery to the dead of the Union who were killed at Gettysburg |

total war | a strategy of bringing war to the entire society, not just the military |
Appomattox Court House | the location in Virginia where General Robert Lee surrender to General Ulysses Grant that ended the Civil War |
