| Spanish-American War | Congress declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. Nearly 1 million Americans volunteered to fight. |
| Theodore Roosevelt | assistant secretary of the Navy left his job to organize a group of volunteer soldiers to fight. Later he was elected as the President of the United States. |
