Manifest Destiny | US meant to extend from Atlantic to Pacific |
Marbury v. Madison | established judicial review |
Mayflower Compact | first government in the colonies |
McCulloch v. Maryland | federal government is supreme over state government |
Mercantilism | colonies exist to benefit the mother country |
Mexican Cession | land US acquired from Mexico after Mexican-American war |
Mississippi River | major route for trade and transport from the Great Lakes south |
Missouri Compromise | agreement that states north of MO were free and south were slave |
Missouri River | trade and transport to the west |
Monopoly | complete control of an industry by one corporation |
Muckrakers | journalists & photographers that showed the evils of industrialization. |
Native Americans | were on the continent before Europeans; were forced to move many times |
Nativist | someone that believes those that are already in US have privileges over immigrants |

Plessy v. Ferguson | Supreme Court ruled that separate is equal |
Political | has to do with government |
Poll Tax | having to pay a fee in order to vote (to keep blacks from voting) |

Revolutionary War | colonists fought against Great Britain for independence |
