Navigation Acts | Designed to ensure that England made money from its colonies' trade. |
Cash Crops | Crops raised to be sold for money. |
gristmill | where a miller would crush farmers grain and turn it in to flour or meal. |
artisans | craftspeople who produced goods like iron works, glass, furniture, weapons and other items for consumers |
Conestoga wagons | German built wagons used to carry goods into town to sell them. |
indigo | a plant that makes a deep blue dye |
Eliza Lucas | she introduced indigo as a successful plantation crop after her father sent her to supervise his South Carolina plantations when she was 17 |
overseers | men hired by planters to watch over and direct the work of slaves |
Stono Rebellion | Rebellion started by slaves in which they killed several planters and their families while trying to secure their freedom. |
Appalachian Mountains | Mountains that stretch from eastern Canada south to Alabama |
fall line | is where waterfalls prevent large boats from moving further up river |
peidmont | means "foot of the mountains" |
Clans | large groups of families that claim a common ancestor |
Smuggling | importing or exporting goods illegally |
