John Locke | European Enlightenment philosopher. Believed in the social contract; his ideas are found in the Declaration of Independence |
William Blackstone | Authority on English Common Law (legal concepts existing before laws were formally written) |
William Penn | Founded Pennsylvania on Quaker religious beliefs |
John Smith | Jamestown leader "If any would not work, neither should he eat." |
Pocahantas | Powhatan Indian who helped save Jamestown by providing food and keeping peace with Native Americans |
Anne Hutchinson | Founded Rhode Island with Roger Williams. Was forced to leave Massachusetts because she began preaching against the Puritans |
Puritans | Group who followed the Pilgrims to Massachusetts. Government by religion. |
Pilgrims | First colonists in Massachusetts. Strict religious rules were imposed on everyone. Mayflower Compact |
Roger Williams | Founded Rhode Island. Left the Massachusetts Puritans because he believed the government should stay out of religion. |
John Winthrop | Puritan founder of Massachusetts. Government by Biblical principles |
