Proclamation of 1763 British law that stated colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains
Sugar Act 1764 no taxation without representation! British taxes were placed on sugar
Navigation Acts a series of Acts passed in the 1650's to regulate colonial trade and enable England to collect taxes
Stamp Act 1765 tax on newspapers, legal and commercial documents. It was repealed.
Townshend Act of 1767 tax placed on imports of paper and tea
Boston Massacre 1770 a protest against British rule and taxes
Tea Act 1773 British East India Company monopolized the tea in America
Tea Party colonists dressed up like Native Americans and dumped 342 cases of British tea into the Boston Harbor
Intolerable Act 1774 Acts that punished the colonists for the tea party. They closed the Boston Harbor,decreased the power of the Mass legislature, issued Quartering Act and Quebec Act
Sons of Liberty a protest organization lead by Sam Adams
Declaratory Act 1766 Parliament announced that they had the right to tax and make decisions for the colonies
Quartering Act 1774 Troops can stay in private homes
Egalitarianism equality (spirit of the Revolution)
Olive Branch Petition 1775 colonists tried a last ditch effort to reconcile with King George
Common Sense written by Thomas Pain and said that America should be independent.
Treaty of Paris it ended the Revolutionary war and established the 13 colonies as 13 states. It also made more US territories east of the Mississippi River.
Articles of Confederation in effect from 1781-1789. Considered the "law of the land" before the Constitution
Shay's Rebellion farmers protested imprisonment for debt, lack of currency, and high taxes
3/5 Compromise each slave would count for 3/5 of one person; both for taxation and representation
