Industrial Revolution Period when the U.S. changed from a farming society to one based on manufacturing. Inventions changed the ways goods were produced & transported. Industrialization led to Urbanization as whole families left the farms to work in cities in the factories
Urbanization The process by which towns and cities grow
Cotton Gin An invention by Eli Whitney that sped up the cleaning process for cotton fibers and, in effect, increased the need for slaves
Interchangeable Parts An invention by Eli Whitney where uniform pieces can be made in large quantities to replace other identical pieces which led to the mass production of goods
Factory System People left their farms to come to cities to have the opportunity to work in factories. Factories made it possible for the mass production of goods with the use of machines
Steamboat The successful use of this invention by Robert Fulton revolutionized transportation and trade in the United States
Erie Canal A man-made waterway in New York that allowed western farmers to sell crops in the North and Northern manufacturers to ship goods to the West
Transcontinental Railroad The rail line that would span the continent and connect the Atlantic and Pacific coasts bringing a wave of new settlers to the West
2nd Great Awakening A wave of religious fervor that inspired missionary work and social reform movements
Civil Disobedience The refusal to obey a government law or laws as a means of passive resistance because of one's moral conviction or belief
Transcendentalist Movement A movement that stressed the relationship between humans and nature as well as the importance of the individual conscience
Temperance Movement A campaign against the sale or drinking of alcohol
Seneca Falls Convention Meeting held in New York, organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton for women to discuss gaining equal rights
Henry David Thoreau The transcendentalist author of "Civil Disobedience" and" Walden Pond" who refused to pay his taxes to protest the Mexican American War
Elizabeth Cady Stanton Organized the Seneca Falls Convention creating the Women's Rights Movement in the United States
Susan B. Anthony Influential leader of the Women's Rights Movement. Worked to gain women equal rights and the right to vote (suffrage)
Frederick Douglass A former slave who became the best known black abolitionist in the country and founded a newspaper called the North Star
