Figurative Language

Metaphor | a figure of speech comparing 2 unalike things that have something in common; used with out the use of "with" or "as" |
Personification | when the author gives a idea, object or animal qualities of a person |
simile | a comparison between two unalike things that have something in common; always uses the words "with" or "as" |
Idiom | an expression that means something different than the original dictionary definition of it's individual words. |
Alliteration | the repetition of usually initial constant sounds in two or more syllables; writers want to emphasize the words |
Onomatopia | the imitation of natural sounds to form a word |
Hyperbole | a figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect. |
Repetition | one or more words are repeated to show urgency/importance |
