What was the Declaratory Act of 1766? | A response from Britain after the removal of the Stamp Act. It allowed Parliament to set the rules and taxes in the colonies, not the colonists. |
What was the Stamp Act of 1766? | A direct tax on colonists for an official seal on all papers, newspapers, playing cards, etc. |
What does the word "Boycott" mean? | Refusal to buy certain goods or items |
What was the Quartering Act? | Part of the Intolerable Acts, this act allowed British free entry and food in colonist's homes. |
What was the Townshend Act? | British placed this tax on colonists to help raise money to keep military in the colonies. It was a tax on glass, paint, lead, and paper. |
What was the Sugar Act? | Tax placed on sugar and molasses |
What was the Tea Act? | An act that lowered the cost of tea and created a monopoly with the British East India Company, destroying competition and harming colonial tea merchants. |
Define "Smuggling" | The illegal entry of goods into the colonies. |
Who were the sons of Liberty and why were they formed? | They were a group of colonists who fought against British taxes- they were formed to protest taxation without representation. |
What were the Coercive/Intolerable Acts? | Laws passed by British to punish colonists after the Boston Tea Party: Quartering Act, closing Boston harbor until tea was paid for, cancelling Mass. charter, appointing General Gage as governor of Mass., allowing British officials to be tried in Eng. |

What does "No Taxation with Representation" mean? | It was the rallying cry of colonists, specifically Sons of Liberty. They didn't think it was fair for Britain to tax colonists or make them follow laws when colonists weren't represented in British Parliament. |
Why did Britain pass so many acts/laws against the colonies? | They were 1) Trying to recoup money and pay off their war debt; and 2) They wanted to exercise/demonstrate control over the colonies and punish them for their rebellion |
What was the Land Proclamation of 1763? | King George III said that colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian mountains and that the land was reserved for Natives- designed to prevent conflict between natives and British colonists. |
Why wasn't the Land Proclamation of 1763 successful in the way King George III intended? | Colonists were angered by the law and moved west of the Appalachians, anyway- they did what they wanted. Conflict with the Natives continued. |
