What was Crittenden's Compromise? It guaranteed slavery where it already existed (and attempted to stop the practice from spreading to other states).
Why is Fort Sumter important to the Civil War? It was the place where the war started. Confederates bombed this Union fort from ships.
What is "martial law"? This means "military rule".
What does the term "habeas corpus" mean? It refers to a court order that requires the government to charge an imprisoned person with a crime or let them go.
What was the goal of the "Anaconda Plan"? This was a plan that the Union Army came up with. In it, they would cut the Confederacy in half using naval blockades to stop supply shipments and adding gunboat patrols up & down the Mississippi River.
What does the term "attrition" mean? This term refers to the wearing down of one side by the other, especially during times of war.
What were "blockade runners"? These were small, fast ships that the Confederacy used to smuggle goods past the Union blockades.
How were Civil War battles named by the North (Union) and the South (Confederacy)? The North named battles for bodies of water or other natural features; the South used the names of the nearest town or man-made landmarks.
Which Civil War battle was the "turning point of the war"? The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War.
What was the "emancipation proclamation"? It was a document, written by President Abraham Lincoln, that freed all of the slaves that were in "states that (were) in rebellion" after Jan. 1, 1863.
What states were not addressed by the "emancipation proclamation"? States that the "emancipation proclamation" did not address were border states. These were slave states that did not secede from the Union: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, & Missouri.
What does the term "siege" mean? This term means "to cut off a city's food supply to try and force them to surrender".
What did the 13th Amendment to the Constitution establish? It established the abolition of slavery in the United States.
According to the video we watched, "America: The Story of US - Revolution", what enabled bullets to fly so far and straight? The invention of "rifling" on the inside of gun barrels. This caused the bullet to spin and fly straight as it left the gun's barrel.
Who was the president of the Confederate States of America? (Also known as the "Confederacy" or the "CSA".) The president of the Confederate States of America was Jefferson Davis.
What was the Reconstruction Act meant to accomplish? Rebuilding the nation after the Civil War. (Pg. 140)

What did the 14th Amendment call for? 1. granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S.; 2. Declared that no state could deprive a person of "life, liberty, or property without due process of the law"; 3.States can't deny any person "equal protection of the laws".
