Berlin airlift In June 1948, Germany shut down anything involving with West Berlin. The United States tried to help lift West Berlin and protect them.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization Formed in 1949, helped provide the military alliance to counter Soviet expansion.
Warsaw Pact In 1955, West Germany became a member of NATO; the Soviet Union and its satellite states formed a rival military alliance. Pledged to defend one another if attacked
