| Cold War | Worldwide conflict between the United States and Soviet Union, which lasted from 1945-1989 |
| iron curtain | Term coined by Winston Churchill representing the dividing line between Communist Soviet and Democratic west. |
| Truman Doctrine | Pres. Truman promise to aid nations struggling against communist movements. This set a new course for American foreign policy |
| George F. Kennan | An American diplomat and a leading authority on the Soviet Union. He outlined containment. |
| containment | A blueprint for American policy that George F. Kennan created |
| Marshall Plan | Made by George Marshall, to help countries in Europe recover from WWI |
| Berlin airlift | In June 1948, Germany shut down anything involving with West Berlin. The United States tried to help lift West Berlin and protect them. |
| North Atlantic Treaty Organization | Formed in 1949, helped provide the military alliance to counter Soviet expansion. |
| Warsaw Pact | In 1955, West Germany became a member of NATO; the Soviet Union and its satellite states formed a rival military alliance. Pledged to defend one another if attacked |
