Joint stock company | business founded by a group of peopled who make an investment and share in profits and losses |
Colony | land claimed by a country in a different area of the world. Settlers are sent to this area to maintain claim. |
Colonization | settlement of the colony |
Mercantilism | colony exists to benefit Mother Country financially; maintaining wealth by controlling trade |
Free enterprise | business compete for consumers who are free to decide where to purchase goods. Gov. has little control |
Triangular Trade | Trade route that existed between the 13 colonies, Africa, and the West Indies. Traded rum, sugar, and slaves |
Indentured Servant | Got passage to North America in exchange of work. Servants worked without pay for a certain period of time. |
Slave | African American who is purchased to work for life on a plantation |
Slave trade | buying and selling of humans for forced labor |
Plantation system | large farms that grew cash crops. The land was farmed by slaves who lived on the land. |
Cash crops | crops grown to sell |
Staple crops | crops that are always in demand |
Industry | production of goods in a factory setting |
Tariff | tax placed on goods coming into a country |
Protective tariff | a tariff placed on foreign goods to protect domestic industry |
Bias | to show favoritism towards a group |
Monarchy | system of government in which powld by a queen or king |
New England colonies | Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire |
Middle colonies | New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania |
Southern colonies | Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia |
Political Reasons | issues relating to government and a citizens' relationship with government |
Economic Reasons | issues relating to how people make money for their families; the production of goods and services |
Social Reasons | issues relating society including people, language, religion, education, art, etc. |
Pilgrim | person who wanted to separate from the Church of England |
Puritan | person who wanted to "purify" or reform the Church of England |
Region | area that is similar in climate, geographic features, and economies |

Amend | to change |
Amendment | a change in the Constitution |
Ratify | to officially accept |
Unalienable Rights | rights that all people possess; rights the government cannot deny |
Liberty | Freedom |

Civic virtue | putting government duty ahead of personal desires |
Civic duty | responsibilities of citizenship includes voting, and paying taxes |
Civic disobedience | rebelling against government not meeting your civic duties |
Abolish | to do away with, bring something to an end |
Abolitionist | Person who wanted slavery to end |
Founding Fathers | men who helped shape the United States through ideas, documents, and leadership |
Political party | group of people with similar ideas about government |
Judicial Review | allows the Supreme Court to declare laws unconstitutional |
Nullify | to declare legally void; invalidate |
States' rights | view that the states should hold more power than the Federal government |
Manifest Destiny | the belief that the United States should spread from "sea to shining sea" |
Immigration | moving from one country to another |
Innovation | new ways of doing things based on new discoveries |
Reform | to change |
Cede | to formally surrender; give up |
Secede | to withdraw |
Union | group of states formally united under one government |
Equality | everyone, regardless of sex, race, or ethnicity, has equal rights |
Annex | to be added to a larger entity |
Naturalized Citizen | to take the legal steps and become a citizen |
Sectionalism | making the section more important than the group |
Primary source | a firsthand or eyewitness account of an event |
