Central Processing Unit (CPU) | The location where the processing of information takes place, often referred to as the processor. |
RAM (random access memory) | Temporary memory that is designed to hold new data and is available only when the computer is turned on. |
ROM (read-only memory) | Permanent internal memory inside the system that is inaccessible by the user and stores the instructions that are installed or programmed at the manufacturer. |
Cache | A temporary storage area that provides a quick access to information. |
Keyboard | A type on input device that offers the input of alphabetic and numeric information, as well as additional, operational, and input keys. |
Input Device | It allows the input of data into the computer. Examples include keyboards, mice, scanners, microphones, and digital cameras. |
Resolution | Defines the clarity of the image that is seen on the computer screen. |
Pixel | A single colored square on the screen that measures resolution. |
Internal Storage | Storage offered within the computer by way of a computer hard disk drive, or hard drive. |
Port | A connector that allows any device to communicate with a computer system. |
Bit | A binary character that is the smallest unit of binary information. Examples are zero or one. |
Byte | Contains eight bits which can represent one alphabetic (A,B,C) or one numeric (1,2,3) character of information. |
Binary Coding System | A code made up of a series of zeroes and ones that controls how a computer system works. |
Ink Jet Printer | A printer that produces characters by squirting minute amounts of ink on the page. |
Laser Printer | A printer that produces the highest quality output by affixing the toner to the surface of the paper using a laser beam. |
