breadcrumbs | A website navigation technique that typically appears horizontally near the top of a webpage, providing links back to each previous page that the user navigated through in order to get to the current page. |
browser | A software application used to locate, retrieve, and display content on the web, including webpage, images, video, and other files. |
chatroom | A website or part of a website or an online service that offers communities a synchronous venue for discussing specific topics. |
constructivism | A learning theory that suggests students learn more effectively when they connect new information and experiences to existing knowledge. |
course management system (CMS) | The software through which online courses are typically delivered. |
digital literacy | The ability to locate, organize, understand, evaluate, analyze and create information using technology. |
distance education | General term for any type of educational activity in which the participants are separated in space. They may or may not be separated in time. |
download | To copy data from a main source, such as an external drive or the internet, to your computer. |
face-to-face (F2F) | The traditional classroom teaching/learning environment in which all of the students and the instructor are interacting in person at the same time and in the same physical space. |
file format | A particular way that information is encoded for storage in a computer file, as files need a way to be represented as bits when stored on a disc drive or other digital storage medium. |
flash | A multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to webpages. |
forum | A topic on the online discussion board, usually in the format of a threaded discussion. |
GIF (.gif) | Graphic files used on the web that support color and various resolutions; however, these images are limited to 256 colors. Support transparency and animation. |
HTML | Authoring language used to create documents on the world wide web. It defines the structure of a web document by using a variety of tags and attributes. |
HTML document | A document or web page that is written in Hypertext Markup Language. |
HTML editor | A program used to edit documents which are written in Hyper Text Markup Language. |
http:// | Defines how messages are formatted and transmitted and what actions web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. |
hyperlink | An element in an electronic document or webpage that links to another place in the same document or webpage or to an entirely different document or webpage. |
JPEG (.jpg) | A commonly used graphic file format for color images. This file format is often used in the online environment because it can reduce files sizes to about 5% of their normal size; however some detail is lost in compression. Does not support transparency. |
learning object | An electronic media resource (or digital file; or collection of files) targeting a lesson objective, standard, or a lesson concept, that can be used and reused for instructional purposes. |
online learning | Education in which instruction and content are delivered primarily over the Internet. |
OTL | Acronym for online teaching and learning. |
PDF (.pdf) | A file format that captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications and allows the user to then send formatted documents and have them appear exactly as they were intended. |
plug-in | Software that adds a specific feature or application to the computer. Usually, it means downloading a program to play specific multimedia applications. |
PNG (.png) | Allow the ability to incorporate low-resolution images that load quickly, but still look high-quality; however these file types often have blurred or feathered edges. |
podcast | A series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released as episodes and often downloaded through web syndication. |
SCORM | A collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning. These specifications enable the reuse of web-based learning content across multiple online environments. |
synchronous | In online courses, an activity that happens in real time such as a chat room discussion or a live lecture presentation using online tools. Allows people to connect at a single point in time, at the same time. |
thread | A single posting in a discussion forum in a series of messages that have been posted as replies to each other. |
universal accessibility | A requirement by law, ADA Section 508, that learning materials, including interfaces, images, sounds, multimedia elements, and all other forms of information, must be made available for use by anyone, regardless of disability. |
upload | To copy data from your computer to an external drive or internet server. |
URL | The global address of webpages, documents, and other resources found on the Web. |
web server | Computers that deliver web pages to be viewed on the world wide web. |
webinar | A seminar which is conducted over the web. It is a type of web conferencing. |
wiki | A collaborative website that comprises the perpetual collective work of many authors. Allows anyone to edit, delete or modify content that has been placed on the website using a browser interface, including the work of previous authors. |
