What is a Local Area Network (LAN)? | A network covering a single site such as a school or office, linked via Ethernet cables or wireless technology |
What is a Wide Area Network (WAN)? | A network over a large geographical area, such as a multinational company, linked via telephone cables, satellite links or microwave |
What is a peer-to-peer network? | A small network where computers are linked directly or via a hub or router to enable sharing of files and peripherals (e.g. printer). All machines have equal status. |
What is a client-server network? | A larger network with a central server that controls access and stores data. Client workstations connect to the server to access data and services. |
What are the advantages of a network? (6) | Allows sharing of peripherals which cuts equipment costs, allows internal e-mail, can share files easily. Client-server networks also give improved security, centralised backup and allow you to access your files on any workstation. |
What are the disadvantages of a network? (5) | If the server fails users cannot access their files, extra hardware costs, client-server networks require specialist staff, network performance can be slow with heavy usage or poor set-up, viruses can spread easily if security isn't up to date |
What is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web? | Internet = network of interconnected computers around the world that allow the sending and retrieval of information, including e-mail. WWW = a collection of multimedia resources accessible via the Internet. |
Why do we need standards? | So that different devices can be connected to any computer system (e.g. via USB standard) and different computer systems can communicate with each other. |
