Question | Answer |
access layer | the access layer is the part of a network that connects clients or servers to the rest of the network; is often a LAN ("Local Area Network") |
BN | "Backbone Network" a large network to which many networks within an organization are connected; usually is a network that interconnects all networks on a single site, but can be larger |
core layer | the central part of a network that provides access to the distribution layer; often a very fast BN ("Backbone Network") that runs through the center of a campus or office complex |
distribution layer | the part of a network that connects the access layer to other access layers and to the core layer; is often a BN ("Backbone Network") in a building |
enterprise network | a BN ("Backbone Network") that connects all networks within a company, regardless of whether it crosses state, national, or international boundaries |
gateway | a device that connects to dissimilar network; allows networks of different vendors to communicate by translating one vendor's protocol into another |
layer-2 switch | uses the data link layer (layer 2) address to forward packets between network segments; learn addresses by reading the source and destination addresses |
layer-3 switch | functions similarly to layer-2 switches, but switch messages on the basis of their network layer address (usually IP address) |
multiprotocol router | can understand several different network layer protocols |
routed backbone | move packets along the backbone on the basis of their network layer address; sometimes called "subnetted backbones" or "hierarchical backbones" and are most commonly used to connect different buildings within the same campus network |
router | a device that connects two similar networks having the same network protocol; also chooses the best route between two networks when there are multiple paths between them |
multiswitch VLAN | in which several switches are used to build VLANS |
single-switch VLAN | a VLAN that operates only inside one switch |
VLAN | "Virtual Local Area Network" a network in which computers are assigned to LAN segments by software rather than by hardware |
