Autopsy/Necropsy | Postmortem exam of dead body. |
Inpatient autopsy | Patient expired during inpatient hospitalization. |
Outpatient autopsy | Patient expired during outpatient treatment. |
Former patient autopsy | Received treatment by a member of the medical staff an inpatient or outpatient, but not currently undergoing treatment. Body must be available for autopsy. Fetal deaths are not included in the inpatient or outpatient autopsy statistics. |
Coroner/Medical Examiner | Elected or appointed official. Investigates any death of unknown cause or other than natural causes. |
Coroner Cases | Suspicious deaths. Coroner determines the cause of death. Homicides, suicides, sudden death, accidents. |
Hospital Autopsy Rate | Percentage of deaths followed by a postmortem exam. Includes autopsy of all adult/children inpatients, outpatients, newborn, and former patients. |
