| Term | Definition |
| ANAPHORA | repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses |
| PARABLE | a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson |
| COMPLAINT | lyric poem of lament, regret, and sadness which may explain the speaker's mood, describe its cause, discuss remedies, and appeal for help |
| CONCEIT | an extended metaphor with a complex logic that governs a poetic passage or entire poem |
| TENOR | the subject of a metaphor |
| CAESURA | breaks in rhythm, thought, or syntax that occur anywhere between the beginning and end of a line of poetry |
| ENJAMBMENT | a line of poetry that does not pause at the end of the line but continues right into the next |
| EPIGRAM | pithy saying or remark expressing an idea in a clever and amusing way (e) |
