| Term | Definition |
| Main Idea | The message the author is sharing. What the author is trying to say to the reader about the topic. |
| Supporting Detail | A fact, statement, example, or detail that explains the main idea and gives the reader clues to the main idea. |
| Inference | When a reader uses clues like the evidence (details) in the passage to figure out what the author is trying to say (main idea). |
| Summary | A well written paragraph which includes the main idea and a few key details that made the author's message clear. |
