| Term | Definition |
| symbolism | Using something to represent a different concept or meaning |
| Internal conflict | A problem or a choice the protagonist faces within themselves |
| External conflict | A problem the protagonist faces that's outside of their control |
| theme | The overall message about life the author is trying to convey |
| mood | The atmosphere of the story; how the reader feels |
| Author's purpose | Why the author is writing the story; Ex: to inform/persuade |
| metaphor | A comparison between two things that does not use "like" or "as" |
| simile | A comparison between two things that uses "like" or "as" |
| tone | The Author's attitude towards the subject |
| plot | The events of the story |
| climax | The most intense par of the story, where the protagonist comes face-to-face with their conflict |
| Situational irony | When the opposite of what is expected to happen actually happens |
| Dramatic irony | When the audience has more information about the events in a story than the characters do |
| setting | When and where a story takes place |
| exposition | An introduction to the conflict, character, and setting |
| narrator | The person telling the story. Can be different from the author |
| First person point of view | Told from the narrator's perspective |
| Third person omniscient point of view | Told from a perspective of someone who is outside the story. This person is all-knowing and has insight into characters' thoughts and feelings |
| Third person limited point of view | Told from a perspective of someone who is outside the story. This person only knows the thoughts and feelings of a few of the characters |
| protagonist | The main character of the story |
| antagonist | The person who causes problems for the protagonist |
| resolution | How the story ends |
