Term | Definition |
smart cover | A foldable protective cover for a tablet PC. The smart cover attaches with magnets to the side of the tablet. Closing the cover puts the tablet to sleep, and opening it wakes the tablet. |
surge | A temporary over-voltage condition in the power being delivered to a device. |
spike | A dramatic and sudden surge in the voltage being delivered to a device. |
surge suppressor | A power strip that contains a metal oxide variable resistor (varistor)—sometimes abbreviated MOV—that can absorb any excess power during a surge or spike, preventing it from reaching the plugged-in devices. |
joule | The energy required to sustain one watt for one second; commonly used to measure the capability of a surge suppressor. |
power sag | A temporary under-voltage condition in the power being delivered to a device. |
power conditioner | A device that includes the features of a surge suppressor, but also contains a feature that bolsters the voltage to connected devices when the voltage coming from the AC outlet sags. |
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) | A combination surge suppressor, power conditioner, and battery backup that handles power surges in the same way that a surge suppressor does but has the added bonus of being able to power devices for a few minutes when a complete power outage occurs. |
K-slot | Abbreviation for Kensington security slot. A slot or hole in the side of some notebook PCs for connecting a special type of lock that connects to a steel cable. |
separation alarm | An alarm system that consists of two small devices—one attached to the computer and the other attached to a person or workstation. If the pieces get separated by a certain distance, an alarm will sound. |
warranty | A guarantee from a manufacturer that a purchased device will be free from manufacturing defects for a certain period of time. |
