smart device | Any type of device or appliance that has embedded technology. |
connected home | A concept where numerous networked home devices provide specific, usually automated functions, and share data and media. |
wearable computer | A computer device that’s worn somewhere on the body—most often, on the head or wrist—and that typically provides mobile computing capabilities and Internet access. |
handheld computer | A dedicated small computer—such as one of today’s smartphones, tablets, or portable music or gaming devices—that can be operated in your hands to perform many of the same functions as a PC. |
smartphone | A cell phone that can make and receive calls and text messages on a cellular network, and that can also connect to the Internet via a cellular or wireless network and perform numerous computing functions, such as email and Web browsing. |
tablet | A computing device that is larger than a smartphone and generally used on your lap or on a table, and that can connect wirelessly to the Internet and perform computing activities. Also called tablet computer or tablet PC. |
personal computer (PC) | A self-contained computer that can perform input, processing, output, and storage functions. Also called computer. See also microcomputer. |
desktop computer | A PC that’s designed to allow the system unit, input devices, output devices, and other connected devices to fit on top of, beside, or under a desk or table. |
portable computer | A PC that’s small enough to be moved around easily. Sometimes called mobile computer. 28 |
laptop computer | A type of portable computer that can fit comfortably on your lap and has a flat screen, and whose screen and keyboard fold together like a clamshell for easy transport. Sometimes called notebook computer. |
notebook computer | A newer term that emerged to describe smaller, lighter laptop computers. Often used interchangeably with the term laptop computer. |
netbook | A folding portable computer that is usually smaller and less powerful than a notebook and that is intended primarily for web browsing and emailing over the Internet. See also laptop computer and notebook computer. |
ultrabook | A high-performance class of small notebook computer that must use low-power Intel Core processors, has solid-state drives for storage, and features a durable unibody chassis. See also laptop computer and notebook computer. |
workstation | A high-performance, single-user computer with advanced input, output, and storage components. |
server | A powerful computer that’s capable of accommodating numerous client computers at the same time. Formerly known as a midrange server or minicomputer. |
mainframe computer | A computer that is bigger, more powerful, and more expensive than a midrange server, and that can accommodate hundreds or thousands of network users performing different computing tasks. |
supercomputer | An extremely fast, powerful, and expensive computer capable of performing quadrillions of calculations in a single second. |
petabyte | The equivalent of 1 quadrillion alphabet letters, numbers, or special characters (bytes). See also byte. |
petaflop | The equivalent of 1 quadrillion calculations per second. |
