Term | Definition |
Computer | Any machine that can do all four of the following things: Receive Input, Process Data, Save Information, & Provide Output |
Hardware | The physical components of a computer |
Software | Program that controls the actions your computer will take |
Program | A set of machine-readable instructions that direct a computer's processor to perform specific operations |
Operating System | Easy-to-use interface that allows a computer's user to easily customize and navigate files |
Input Device | Any piece of hardware that allows the user to enter commands or data into the computer |
Output Device | Any piece of computer hardware that sends information from the computer to the user |
Binary | Language, consisting of 1's and 0's, that programmers use to tell the computer how and when to turn it's switches on and off |
Bit | Smallest unit of computer memory |
Byte | 8 bits |
Read Only Memory (ROM) | Long-term memory of a computer |
Random Access Memory (RAM) | Short-term memory of a computer |
Central Processing Unit | The "brain" of the computer. Responsible for interpreting and following commands from the computer's hardware and software. |
Hertz | The number of operations that a computer processor can perform per second |
Extension | Three or four letters at the end of a file name that tells what type of software can open it |
