Term | Definition |
Spreadsheet | An electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and columns of a grid and can be manipulated and used in calculations. |
Workbook | Student's book containing instruction and exercises relating to a particular subject. |
Worksheet | A page on excel. |
Workbook window | Minimize/maximize options appear immediately below these Excel Window options, if the Workbook window is maximized. |
Cell | Is analogous to a field in database management systems. |
Sheet tab | A sheet, sheet tab, or worksheet tab is the current worksheet that is being displayed. |
Active worksheet | The active or current sheet is said to be in focus, which means that any action you perform in the program - such as entering data or formatting - takes place on the active sheet. |
Workspace | Is just a file that contains display information about your workbooks, not the actual workbooks themselves. |
Columns | Rows run horizontally and columns run vertically. |
Rows | Columns are labeled by letters; rows by numbers. |
Headings | The column header is the colored row of letters used to identify each column within the sheet, or workbook. |
Cell reference | A string identifying a particular cell in a spreadsheet, possibly relative to the cell containing the reference. |
Name box | Name box on the formula bar This is best used for creating a workbook level name for a selected range. Create a name from selection You can conveniently create names from existing row and column labels by using a selection of cells in the worksheet. |
Formula bar | A toolbar at the top of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet window that you can use to enter or copy an existing formula in to cells or charts. |
Formula | Formulas in spreadsheet programs such as Excel are used to perform calculations on values entered and stored in the program. |
Relative reference | By default, all cell references are relative references. |
Absolute reference | In Excel and other spreadsheets, a relative cell reference identifies the location of a cell or group of cells, on the other hand an absolute reference can’t be changed. |
Mixed reference | A mixed cell reference is either an absolute column and relative row or absolute row and relative column. |
Active cell | In a spreadsheet program such as Excel or Google Spreadsheets, the active cell is identified by a black or blue border or outline surrounding the cell. |
Enter data | Data is information that is stored in any spreadsheet program such as Excel and Google Spreadsheets. |
Range | Defined name A name that represents a cell, range of cells, formula, or constant value. |
Gridlines | There are two types of gridlines in spreadsheet programs such as Excel and Google Spreadsheets - worksheet gridlines and chart gridlines. |
