platform | The hardware architecture of a computer and the operating system that runs on it. |
platform dependency | Applications and hardware that are only designed to work with a particular operating system. |
Microsoft Windows | The operating system produced by Microsoft Corporation, first released in 1985. |
Mac OS X | The operating system produced by Apple Inc. |
UNIX | A server operating system written with the C programming language. |
Linux | First developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991, Linux is an open source operating system, meaning that the source code for it is freely available for use and modification. |
open source | Operating system software built with contributions by users whose source code is free to anybody to modify and use. |
Chrome OS | Developed by Google and based on Linux, this operating system is designed to have specific functionality delivered via web-based apps. |
Android | An open source operating system initially developed by Google that runs mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and netbooks. |
iOS | The Apple operating system for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Apple TV devices. |
multitasking | The ability to have two or more tasks running at the same time. Also refers to the CPU’s ability to execute several processes simultaneously. |
least possible privileges | A principle applied by network operating systems that means that each user is only given access to what he or she needs in order to get his or her work done. |
Windows 10 | Released in early 2015 and featured Cortana, an intelligent assistant search tool, and, the Microsoft Edge browser. Allows users to interact with their desktop, laptop, or tablet using a touchscreen, and on the Start menu, live tiles represent apps. |
Cortana | The personal assistant/search feature introduced in Windows 10. |
Start menu | A menu that appears when you click the Start button on the taskbar that displays commands, apps menus, and rectangular tiles used to launch apps, the web, documents, or programs. |
