data processing | A term that refers to the activities performed with a database, including various types of interactions and events. |
batch processing | A setup where data processing occurs at a scheduled time, or at a critical point in a process, saving redundant effort by updating data all at once, rather than continuously. |
transactional processing | A setup where the database updates immediately for each input. |
real-time system | A system setup that performs critical functions that require data with second-by-second accuracy—for example, a factory automation system or an air traffic control system. |
online transactional processing (OLTP) | A system used for e-commerce transactions, providing fast, always-on processing. OLTP systems offer the benefit of being in business 24 hours a day because customers expect rapid order processing. |
data entry operator | An end user who types and changes database data as needed, ensuring that the contents of the database remain as up-to-date as possible. |
