Social Networking Sites | Allows users to communicate with each other and share their lives in a virtual community. Some examples are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, & Tumblr. |
Cookie Tracking | Cookies let some websites remember information about you like your password and username. Cookies can make the website personalized just for you. Some users don’t like websites recording information about them so they set their browser to not accept cooki |
Hacker | A person who gains unauthorized access to a computer. |
Virus | Programs that can hurt your computer. A virus can create, move, or erase your files and cause your computer to not work properly. |
Identity Theft | A crime where someone wrongfully gets and uses another person’s name and/or personal data in order to benefit themselves (ex. Steal their money) |
Plagiarism | Taking someone else’s ideas or work and claiming they are your own |
Intellectual Property | Creations of the mind: inventions, trademarks, novels, poems, plays, film, music, artistic works. Allows the owners of the creations to benefit. Protects their works. |
Copyright | the exclusive legal right, given to the creator of a work to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same (Ex. Songwriters must be paid for writing their songs when you buy them) |
Fair Use Act | Allows limited use of a copyrighted work without payment. Examples: You can use 10% or 3 min of a copyrighted video in your presentations 10% or 30 seconds of copyrighted music You can make one backup copy of a CD for yourself |
Digital Millenium Copyright Act | Updates US copyright law to include digital media |
Internet Censorship | The control or blocking of what can be viewed or published on the internet |
Netiquette | Good manners when using the internet. Respecting others’ privacy and not doing annoying behaviors online. |
Spam | Junk email. E-mail that you don’t want to get. People who “spam” usually send useless e-mails (or advertising) to large numbers of people at once. |
Spyware | Software that can spy on your computer. It can get passwords, e-mail messages, credit card information and more. |
Anti-virus Software, Filtering Software | Anti-virus programs are designed to detect and remove viruses from your computer. Filtering software restricts and controls the content a user can see. (The school uses this to filter out “bad” websites) |
Malware | Programs designed to do damage to computers. “mal” means bad! |
Internet Search Engines | Used to locate websites when users enter search terms or phrases. Some examples are: Google, yahoo, Bing, Ask |
Internet Domains | A name used to identify a website. .com (commercial site) .edu (educational site) .gov (government site) .org (organization) |
