| character | a person in a story |
| protagonist | the main character |
| antagonist | the enemy of the main character |
| flat character | 1-2 sides of a character are revealed |
| round character | a fully developed character |
| static character | a character that does not change |
| dynamic character | a character who changes throughout the story |
| characterization | the process by which the author reveals the personality of the characters |
| direct characterization | the author tells the audience what the personality of the character is |
| indirect characterization | the author shows things that reveal the personality of the character |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is being told |
| narrator | the person who tells the story |
| first person point of view | the main character tells the story from his/her perspective |
| third person limited point of view | the story is told by a narrator who has limited access to the characters' thoughts and feelings |
| third person omniscient point of view | the story is told by a narrator who knows everything about the characters including their thoughts and feelings |
| second person point of view | the narrator is talking to the reader/audience |
