Term | Definition |
Web page | a document that is served over the World Wide Web and can be displayed by a Web browser. |
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) | the common underlying communication protocol language used by the World Wide Web. |
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) | these are used to uniquely identify and address each resource on the Internet; basically a Web address. |
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) | the language used by Web servers and browsers to describe a Web page. |
CSS (Cascading style sheets) | these enable you to store a Web page's style and formatting information separate from the HTML code. |
JavaScript | a client-side scripting language that runs inside Web browsers to help create far more interactive Web pages than are possible with only HTML. |
Client-side | refers to programs that execute completely on a user’s local computer. |
Server-side | refers to programs that are executed completely on a server and make use of the server’s computational resources. |
ASP.NET | the part of the .NET Framework that enables you to develop programmable Web forms and Web services. |
Postback | when processing information in a contact form is submitted and reloads the page |
State management | the process of maintaining state for a Web page across round-trips. |
Client side state management | this uses HTML code and the capabilities of the Web browser to store state information on the client computer. |
Query strings | a state is maintained by putting the data as a set of key-value pairs in the query string portion of a page URL. |
Cookies | small packets of information that are stored by a Web browser locally on the user’s computer. |
Hidden fields | contains information that is not displayed on a Web page but is still part of the page’s HTML code. |
ViewState | the mechanism ASP.NET uses to maintain the state of controls across page postbacks. |
Session state | an ASP.NET application's way of identifying individual session through cookies or a distinct URL |
Application state | used to store data that is used throughout an application. |
