Term | Definition |
Server | A computer or computer program that manages access to a centralized resource or service in a network. |
Cloud | In computer networking, cloud computing is computing that involves a large number of computers connected through a communication network such as the Internet, similar to utility computing. |
URL | A URL is the address of a specific Web site or file on the Internet. |
File extension | a group of letters occurring after a period in a file name, indicating the format of the file. |
Network | a number of interconnected computers, machines, or operations. |
Router | a device that forwards data packets to the appropriate parts of a computer network. |
Access point | Access points are stand-alone devices that plug into an Ethernet switch. |
Bandwidth | Bandwidth describes the maximum data transfer rate of a network or Internet connection. It measures how much data can be sent over a specific connection in a given amount of time. |
Browser | A web browser, or simply "browser," is an application used to access and view websites. |
Search engine | a program for the retrieval of data from a database or network, esp. the Internet. |
Motherboard | Everything is based around the motherboard, can add memory to it. |
Hard Drive | A primary storage, comes in size of gigabytes. There is a disk that spins around and as it spins the arm goes back and forth to read the ones and zeros. |
RAM | Stands for "Random Access Memory," RAM is made up of small memory chips that form a memory module. These modules are installed in the RAM slots on the motherboard of your computer. |
ROM | Stands for "Read-Only Memory."ROM is memory containing hardwired instructions that the computer uses when it boots up, before the system software loads. |
CD Drive | Optical drive is the generic name; drives are usually described as "CD" "DVD", or "Blu-ray". Optical disk drives are an integral part of stand-alone consumer appliances such as CD players, DVD players and DVD recorders. |
Floppy Drive | A floppy disk,is a disk storage medium composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic carrier lined with fabric that removes dust particles. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive. |
Memory | Computers process and store data, however, computers store data in digital format, which means the information can always be called up exactly the way it was stored. |
CPU | Stands for "Central Processing Unit."It pretty much the brain of your computer. It processes everything from basic instructions to complex functions. |
Gigabyte | One gigabyte (abbreviated "GB") is equal to 1,000 megabytes. Sector - A sector is the smallest unit that can be accessed on a hard disk. Each platter, or circular disk of a hard disk is divided into tracks, which run around the disk. |
