Internet | a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide. |
Network | any net like combination of filaments, lines, veins, passages, or the like. |
Internet backbone | High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic. |
Internet service provider | a company that offers access to the Internet and to e-mail, usually for a monthly fee. |
World wide web | a system of extensively interlinked hypertext documents: a branch of the Internet. |
Hypertext transfer protocol | The client-server TCP/IP protocol used on the World-Wide Web for the exchange of HTML documents. It conventionally uses port 80. |
Web pages | a single, usually hypertext document on the World Wide Web that can incorporate text, graphics, sounds, etc. |
Web site / Internet site | a connected group of pages on the World Wide Web regarded as a single entity, usually maintained by one person or organization and devoted to a single topic or several closely related topics. |
Home page | the initial page of a site on the World Wide Web. |
Web sever / web host | a remote computer or a computer program that delivers Web pages to a user's computer, or a client, upon request from a web browser. |
Publishing | the activities or business of a publisher, especially of books or periodicals. |
Intranet | a computer network with restricted access, as within a company, that uses software and protocols developed for the Internet. |
Extra net | an intranet that is partially accessible to authorized persons outside of a company or organization. |
e-commerce | business that is transacted by transferring data electronically, especially over the Internet. |
web browser / browser | a software program that allows the user to find and read encoded documents in a form suitable for display, especially such a program for use on the World Wide Web. |
uniform resource locator | Uniform Resource Locator: a protocol for specifying addresses on the Internet. |
hyperlink / link | to create hyperlinks in or to. |
tags | a piece or strip of strong paper, plastic, metal, leather, etc., for attaching by one end to something as a mark or label |
markup | the amount added by a seller to the cost of a commodity to cover expenses and profit in fixing the selling price. |
platform independent | a horizontal surface or structure with a horizontal surface raised above the level of the surrounding area. |
cascading styles sheets | An extension to HTML to allow styles, e.g. colour, font, size to be specified for certain elements of a hypertext document. |
style | particular kind, sort, or type, as with reference to form, appearance, or character |
style sheet | a listing of the rules of usage in style employed by a publishing house or in a publishing project. Compare style book. |
text editor | a program for editing stored documents, performing such functions as adding, deleting, or moving text. |
